Sax’s Joint in downtown Petaluma is a breakfast spot that leans heavily into its retro diner vibe, making it more than just a place to grab morning grub. Walking inside feels like stepping into a mid-century time capsule with chrome details, checkered floors, and servers dressed to match the theme. This atmosphere sets the tone for a relaxed, nostalgic start to your day.

The menu showcases hearty portions that draw from classic American comfort breakfast with a few twists. Favorites among locals include the corn beef hash paired with eggs and the indulgent crab cake eggs Benedict, which combines familiar breakfast flavors with a bit of coastal flair. The French toast and waffles offer lighter-sweet options, each crafted with attention to texture—crispy on the outside, airy inside. Homemade pastries, particularly the cinnamon rolls, are a highlight that seem to come out fresh daily, perfect for pairing with the solid Bloody Marys on hand.

Sax’s tends to fill up on weekend mornings and brunch hours, attracting groups ranging from longtime Petaluma residents catching up over breakfast to visitors who’ve heard about the creative takes on diner classics. It’s a cozy, bustling spot where accommodating staff make room for everyone, including those who may have special needs or companions like service dogs.

Beyond the food and retro atmosphere, the restaurant quietly engages with the community in meaningful ways, such as offering resources aligned with ongoing local health concerns. This layer adds to the feeling that Sax’s Joint is stitched into the neighborhood fabric—not just a place to eat but one to support and visit regularly.

For those seeking a substantial, well-executed breakfast in a setting that encourages lingering, Sax’s Joint offers an experience marked equally by generous portions, a friendly vibe, and a distinctive old-school diner charm.

Starting with the food, it really is some of the best breakfast diner food you can get in also Sonoma County. My favorite item is the corn beef hash. All the menu items are extremely great on portions. Keep in mind the diner has a theme, including the waitresses dressing up. All around a great Breakfast and brunch place especially all the homemade pastries they have. Staff is very friendly and you get a great value for the amount of food.

Service was perfect. Food was so tasty. Presentation, perfect. Dessert, amazing made fresh daily, they are knows for their amazing home made desserts. Fruit salad—perfect. I absolutely loved the Mexican Bene, you can really taste the chunks of chorizo, and the spicy hollandaise sauce and the entire dish was just incredible for breakfast. We searched for a good breakfast spot, Sax's came up, and it was spot on. We loved it and we will definitely be back. A true family-run business to the max. Thank you!

If you’re looking for a diner that doesn’t just serve food but serves experiences, Sax’s Joint is the place. Walking in feels like stepping back into a 1950s time capsule—chrome, checkered floors, and that nostalgic vibe that makes you want to stay all day. But let’s talk about the real star: the Crab Eggs Benedict. Epic doesn’t even begin to cover it. Imagine perfectly poached eggs draped in silky hollandaise, stacked on a mountain of fresh crab so generous it could’ve come straight from Poseidon’s pantry. Every bite is rich, decadent, and absolutely unforgettable—the kind of dish that makes you wonder why every other Benedict you’ve ever had even bothered showing up. And the portions? Let’s just say Sax’s Joint doesn’t believe in “small.” You come here hungry, you leave victorious. Bottom line: Sax’s Joint isn’t just a diner—it’s a full-on culinary throwback with food that slaps harder than a jukebox hit.

Wow,,, I was mind blown by both the quantity and quality of their foods when I visited there last week with my girl friends. For someone who is so used to price in SF, seeing delicious 4 pieces of chicken and amazing waffle for 20 dollars was a culture shock. The waffle was probably one of the best I ever had. It was so airy and gooey inside and perfectly crispy outside. We only ordered 2 breakfast plates and three of us couldn’t finish. Can’t wait to go back there to try differ dishes !

The food was excellent, the staff were accommodating of our needs (service dog), and the restaurant was cozy/comfortable even though it was bustling. Additionally, they were providing free narcan to help the community with our ongoing fentanyl crisis. It's the little things that make this my ideal place to be for breakfast/brunch.

Generally, I enjoyed eating here. From what we got, the eggs were fine. Cooked well. And I had my own personal gripe with the modifications I made to my bacon waffle, aka probably don't put peanut butter and bananas. But some of the things we didn't quite like was that the coffee was slightly burnt, the food wasn't too standout (just fine,) and most importantly the potatoes were NOT seasoned well. Like, literally I could taste no salt or attempt at making the potatoes any more than potatoes with scallions on top. I also wish their chocolate milk was better as it came across like milk mixed with chocolate powder that just settled at the bottom and ended up tasting more like milk than I'd personally prefer. Overall, well loved but I don't think it's really all that outstanding. Just can't give it a 3 star, doesn't feel right.

I got an incredible birthday cake from Sax!! We got cookies & cream frosting with chocolate & vanilla cake. You have to call to place the order- I attached a photo of all their flavor options. Total was $71 for a “standard” cake (I.e. no special requests.) Half the cake was able to serve 10 people. Everyone said how moist & delicious it was, and loved that it wasn’t overly sugary tasting. Highly recommend!!

Overall food was pretty good but a bit salty. Cinnamon rolls, biscuits were homemade. Service was excellent. Small interior but offers outside dining, nice on warm days. One small mouse sited when we sat outside, hopefully they weren’t inside.
